After having had bad dental work done as a child, Maria Landesmann suddenly
realised that as an adult the answer was only a phonecall away …
Thirty year old Maria was one of many people left with the permanent marks
of bad dental work she had undergone while a young teenager.
The result of the changes to her front teeth was a crooked smile where
the teeth on either side of her two front ones were different sizes, with
one very small and one large.
Growing up, Maria had been forced to endure nicknames due to her teeth
and, although this teasing had become less frequent as she grew older,
she still felt self-conscious and unhappy with the way she looked. |
However, following a bout of post natal depression after the birth of
her and her partner’s first born four years ago, the old anxiety
about her smile came back to haunt her.
Maria said: “I used to spend quite a lot of time and effort
on my appearance, but as a new mum you just don’t have the luxury
of time, and you certainly don’t have the energy, to look after
yourself in the same way.” “After the post natal
depression disappeared, I realised I was still left with a deep unhappiness
about my smile because of my teeth and I felt like a worried teenager
again.”
Pregnant with her second child and concerned the post natal depression
might return, Maria started to research what could be done about correcting
her smile and discovered Dr Neil Gerrard at the Clifton Dental Practice
in Bristol. “When I saw Neil’s credentials, I realised
he was not only one of the top cosmetic dentists in the region, but in
the country, so, about 10 months after I had my second baby, I called
him to arrange a consultation.” “I am so glad I
did because the results have been incredible.”
In fact, Dr Gerrard trained with the dentist team behind the famous TV
programme Extreme Makeover and works with the latest dental techniques
and state-of-the-art materials.
After having had a long talk with Maria, the pair decided the perfect
solution would be to create six veneers, which are very thin layers of
porcelain that are bonded to the existing teeth and give an extremely
realistic appearance. “Dr Gerrard made me feel completely
at ease and made sure I understood what was going on at all times, so
the whole experience was really straightforward and worry-free.”
|
Dr Gerrard saw Maria a total of five times during her treatment,
from the first consultation to the final check up, which was just over
a year ago. “It has been a life-changing experience for
me – especially because now I have two children I have even less
time to do my hair or put make up on. But the incredible thing is that
it just doesn’t matter because I know I’m always going to
look great
when I smile!” “People’s reactions have been
fabulous because they don’t quite know what is different but everyone
has come up to me at some stage and said something really complimentary
about my appearance.” “The key to good cosmetic
treatments is that they should look natural. It’s only when people
that knew me well had a good look that they twigged what the change was.”
“The change has made such a huge impact that when my partner,
who was quite sceptical about it all at first, saw how amazing they looked
he booked himself in to get his own done!” “You
can’t put a price on something that makes you feel so glamorous,
sophisticated and beautiful – and compared to things like flash
cars and designer handbags I’d rather have a nice smile to flash
any day.” To find out more about improving your

Sam Scott, 37, started to have problems
with her teeth when she was 16. As her wisdom teeth came through,
her two top front teeth were pushed together and outwards until
they stuck out from her mouth.
For years she hated seeing pictures of herself, and as she grew
older they started to bother her more and more.
When she started working as a nurse, she realised there were corrective
procedures that could help, and heard about Dr Neil Gerrard at
the Clifton Dental Practice.
“I had never thought that anything like
cosmetic surgery would be something I would have because I had
a preconceived notion it was either for desperate people or the
very wealthy.
“But the more I looked into it, the
more I realised I could afford it and
that it wasn’t going to be a tremendous amount of hassle.
“When I went to see Dr Gerrard for the consultation, he
put me at ease and showed me pictures of people before and after
who had veneers – I couldn’t believe the difference.”
After talking with Sam about her teeth and the results she wanted,
Dr Gerrard recommended a course of tooth-whitening, followed by
four veneers.
The treatment was carried out over six

months, and involved several long dental appointments, but Sam says
the results were definitely worth it. “I think
it’s human nature to not want to go through with the hard
bit, but you have to if you want the end result to be perfect. All
the way through Dr Gerrard was brilliant and kept me going. He’d
call and ask if I was feeling okay after a treatment and always
seemed to be on hand if I was worried. |

“The process was finished a
year ago. But the best thing is that people still comment on my
teeth and say how lovely they are. I may not have allowed my teeth
to get me down too much before, but they really make me feel good
now.”

Dental veneers
Sam is one of many patients who have had their smiles transformed
by dental veneers.
These are very thin layers of porcelain that are bonded to your
teeth, giving an extremely realistic look.
Veneers can disguise a variety of imperfections, including crooked
teeth, stains, cracks, chips and gaps.
Dr Neil Gerrard is a member of many top dental organisations,
including the British and American Academies of cosmetic dentistry,
and offers a full range of cosmetic services from one-hour tooth
whitening to complete smile makeovers.

After years of hiding his yellowing teeth and ageing bridgework,
Tom Barrie sought help from The Clifton Dental Practice
|
‘Following
an accident, in which I lost several teeth, I was fitted with a dental
bridge. Over the years, nature and my lifestyle started to take their
toll on the colour of my natural teeth, and like many people, I found
they were beginning to look increasingly yellow. This was all the more
noticeable because the bridgework, though looking old in other ways, remained
as white as the day it was fitted. ‘As a result, I didn't
feel at all confident about my smile and it was really beginning to get
me down. But I’d always believed that any procedure to improve it
would prove too costly. Recently, however, a colleague told me about Clifton
Dental Practice, and after looking into the treatments they offered, I
arranged to have a consultation with Neil Gerrard, a top cosmetic dentist.

DR NEIL GERRARD
‘Like
countless others, I’ve had an inherent fear of dentists since childhood,
but Neil reassured me and put my mind at rest. He explained all of the
options available to me in a way that I could really understand –
what each procedure would entail, how much it would cost, what results
I could expect, and what discomfort I’d experience, if any. And
that made me feel very comfortable with the whole process.
I decided to go ahead with a session of Zoom whitening, which Neil explained
was the number one whitening treatment in America – land of the
perfect smile! The treatment was totally painless and took just over an
hour. All I had to do was relax. I even got to watch a film on a pair
of specially designed goggles.
‘The results were fantastic – after this initial procedure,
I could instantly see a difference in the colour of my natural teeth which
I maintained at home by using a special whitening gel in a custom made
dental tray. Neil told me to use the gel every day for the first two weeks
after my treatment, and then only to use it when I felt it was necessary.
‘I had two more appointments with Neil – in order for him
to prepare and fit a replacement bridge. This done, I now have a natural
and healthy looking smile that I am absolutely delighted with. And I have
more confidence than ever before!’ |
