About dental crowns
Dental crowns, sometimes known as caps, are restorations that are used to strengthen teeth that have been weakened by injury, decay or trauma. With a crown, we are able to build up the tooth and restore its function, reducing the risk of infection and crumbling and enabling you to keep your tooth. Crowns are placed over the top of the tooth and they can be made from various materials such as porcelain, which gives a lovely natural looking finish.
Crowns are designed for strength and durability as well as a aesthetics and they should last for up to ten years. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, as although it’s not possible for the porcelain to decay, the area of the tooth that joins the crown can become infected.
Crown treatment
We usually carry out crown treatment over a period of two weeks with two separate treatment sessions. During the first session, we will prepare the tooth and create an impression to be used by dental technicians to create your custom-made crown. Preparing the tooth involves removing the decayed tissue, cleaning the tooth thoroughly and shaping it.
Once the new crown is ready, the second session can take place. This is usually around 14 days later. The crown is placed over the tooth and then secured using adhesive. We will check that it fits perfectly and then you will be free to go and enjoy your new healthy tooth!
People in Bristol have a lot of options on how to go about getting their teeth fixed and up to scratch just so they can remain pretty dandy. Things like having a veneer, a crown or a bridge fitted however would on average take a good couple of weeks to achieve because the fittings had to be sent off for. But now that is a thing of history as some genius has come up CEREC. It was always on the cards as technology started to get excited with itself in dental circles, but if you find somewhere that offers this treatment, you can have these treatment done within a couple of hours! Once you go in and have a digital x-ray taken, it is piped into a computer and then into a machine that will make the fitting as you are being prepared. Then you are fitted out with your new teeth. The advantage of this is that the new fitting can be also be rectified there and then if it is ill-fitting, and customized on site to suit your mouth. This has been a dream for people in a hurry and considering it is as cheap as the older ways, it has immense advantages over the way such treatments used to be done.
