If snoring is keeping your household awake at night or causing arguments with your partner, now is the time to act. At Clifton Dental Studio, we understand the importance of good quality sleep and we have effective treatments available to prevent snoring and restore peace at home.
About snoring
Snoring is the name given to noises made when you sleep, which occur as a result of the soft tissue at the back of the throat vibrating. These noises include snorting, grunting and breathing heavily. Most people snore from time to time, usually when they have been drinking alcohol, when they sleep on their back or when they are ill with a cough or cold; however, sometimes, snoring can be persistent and if this is the case, there may be an underlying cause.
The most common risk factors for snoring include:
being overweight
smoking
lying on your back
drinking alcohol (especially before you go to bed)
allergies
What can be done about snoring?
In many cases, making basic changes to your sleep routine and the position you sleep in can have very positive effects; this may involve sleeping on your side and avoiding alcohol in the evenings. In other cases, making slightly more drastic lifestyle changes may be advisable; this may include cutting down on drinking, giving up smoking and losing weight by following a healthy eating plan and doing more exercise.
We can also help snorers by providing a custom-made appliance called the Somnowell mandibular advancement device; this device helps to prevent snoring by opening up the airway while you sleep and increasing air flow. The Somnowell device works by moving the lower jaw forward slightly and maintaining this position when you are asleep. The appliance is easy to use and it is fitted to you, so you should find it very comfortable. We recommend Somnowell because it is tried and tested and the results are very impressive; if you would like to find out more, simply give us a call.
Facial rejuvenation treatment is a safe, simple and effective way of giving your complexion a healthy, youthful glow this summer. If you’re worrying about wrinkles or want to roll back the clock and look your best for a special summer event, now is the time to call and book a consultation with Dr Neil Gerrard. Dr Gerrard has many years of experience in facial rejuvenation treatment, so you can be sure that you’re in good hands!
About facial rejuvenation treatment
We offer two types of facial rejuvenation treatment, both of which are non-surgical. Botox and dermal fillers can help to reinvigorate the complexion, softening wrinkles and lines and giving your skin a radiant glow.
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which is used as an effective, non-invasive remedy for lines and facial folds. This targeted treatment softens lines and reduces the visibility of crow’s feet, laughter lines, nasal lines and wrinkles on the forehead to create younger looking skin. It works by blocking nerve signals to the facial muscles, causing them to relax. Botox treatment only takes around 15-30 minutes and the results are temporary, lasting up to six months. During the procedure, Dr Gerrard uses a very fine tipped needle to inject Botox slowly and carefully into the desired areas of the skin. The results will become visible around 24-72 hours later.
Dermal fillers are another effective treatment for lines and wrinkles. However, they can also help to reduce sagging, boost sunken skin and create more definition in the facial features. Fillers add volume to the skin and they can highlight the cheekbones and jaw line to make your features really stand out. We can also inject filler into the lips to add fullness. Like Botox, the procedure for filler treatment is very simple and the results are temporary. Treatment takes just 15-30 minutes and there is minimal pain involved. The results of treatment should last up to nine months.
If you’re eager to inject radiance into your skin this summer, call now and make an appointment.
Disrupted sleep can soon cause you to feel tired, lethargic and irritable. If you regularly wake yourself up with snoring or you’re struggling to sleep because you share a bed with a snorer, now is the time to do something about it and start your journey to undisturbed, peaceful nights.
Why do I snore?
Snoring is a very common problem and in most cases it is occasional. Potential causes include sleeping on your back, allergies and illnesses such as colds and coughs. If you snore on a regular basis it may be down to underlying issues that prevent the body from getting enough oxygen while you sleep. The most common risk factors include being overweight, smoking, drinking alcohol and structural problems that affect the passage of air through the nostrils.
How can I stop snoring?
Sometimes, stopping snoring is as simple as giving up alcohol in the evening, taking allergy medication or swapping your sleeping position so that you lie on your side rather than your back. However, in other cases, more drastic changes such as giving up smoking and losing weight may be required.
In cases where lifestyle changes are not sufficient, we can help to prevent snoring by providing Somnowell treatment. Somnowell offers a range of treatments, including a mandibular advancement appliance that holds the jaw in the optimum position to encourage air flow. Unlike similar devices, the Somnowell advancement mandibular appliance also helps to reduce the risk of oral health problems including decay and gum disease, as it is resistant to fungi and bacteria. Somnowell also provides treatments for TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder and sleep apnoea.
If snoring is getting to you or your partner is begging you to do something to stop your snoring, call now and make an appointment.
If snoring and sleepless nights are getting you down, we are here to help. Whether you are a snorer or you share a bed with somebody who snores on a regular basis, there are ways to restore the peace and ensure you get the rest you need.
What causes snoring?
The noise you hear when somebody snores is caused by the vibration of the soft tissue at the back of the mouth. Most people snore from time to time, but if you snore on a regular basis, this may be a sign that you are struggling to get enough oxygen while you sleep.
The most common risk factors for snoring include being overweight, sleeping on your back and allergies. Structural problems, which affect the nasal passages, colds and coughs can also increase the risk of snoring.
In many cases, changing your sleeping position, treating allergies and losing weight can help to reduce snoring. However, if snoring continues, there may be other options available.
How we can help
We provide Somnowell anti-snoring treatments to help patients enjoy restful nights of sleep. Somnowell has produced a range of treatments for snoring, TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders and sleep apnoea and we have found these treatments to be highly effective.
We recommend the Somnowell anti-snoring device to combat snoring. This device adjusts the position of the lower jaw in order to increase air flow and ensure that you get enough oxygen during sleep. The device shifts the lower jaw forward slightly and facilitates improved breathing during the night. The device is built to last and it is designed for comfort.

About Botox
Botox is a very popular anti-ageing facial treatment, and is most commonly used to reduce the visibility of lines and wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes and between the nose and mouth. Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which is injected into the skin to facilitate the relaxation of the facial muscles and prevent contraction. This results in the softening of lines and creates a smooth, youthful looking surface.
Botox treatment is non-surgical and the results only last around 4-6 months. It is very popular with people who want younger looking skin without the risks or recovery times associated with facial surgery.
Dermal fillers
We also offer dermal fillers, which are a non-invasive solution for sagging, dull skin. Fillers add volume to the skin and enhance the facial features to bring out your best bits and create a younger look. Like Botox, filler treatment is temporary, with results lasting up to 9 months. We can also use fillers to plump the lips and create more definition in the jaw line and around the cheekbones.
The procedure
Before you have Botox or filler treatment, Dr Neil Gerrard will explain how the treatment works and what the procedure entails. He will then discuss the areas of the skin you want to address and plan your treatment. At your treatment session, a very fine needle will be used to inject Botox or filler into the desired areas. Treatment usually takes around 20 minutes and most people find that the injections are painless.
After the procedure, you can return to work or head home without worrying about taking time off to recover.

Why do we snore?
Snoring is very common and most people snore every now and then. Often, snoring is linked to sleeping position, allergies and illnesses (such as coughs and colds). Sometimes, however, it can indicate that the body is struggling to get sufficient oxygen. If you snore on a regular basis, it is advisable to seek help to enable you and the people around you to enjoy peaceful nights of sleep.
The most common risk factors for snoring include: drinking alcohol, smoking, obesity, allergies and lying on your back can also increase the risk of snoring.
What can be done for snoring?
Often, adapting sleeping position can help with snoring, but if snoring persists or you snore on a regular basis no matter which position you sleep in, other steps may be recommended. In many cases, lifestyle changes can make a significant difference and it’s advisable to try and adapt a healthier lifestyle if you are overweight, you smoke or you drink more than recommended daily intake of alcohol. Losing weight, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake and doing more exercise can all help with snoring.

Somnowell appliances work by moving the jaw forward slightly, which helps to keep the airway open. Treatment can also be beneficial for people who suffer with sleep apnoea and tooth grinding.

About facial rejuvenation
Facial rejuvenation treatment is designed to reinvigorate the complexion and tackle the signs of ageing to make you look and feel younger. We offer highly effective, safe, non-invasive anti-ageing treatments, one of our most popular being Botox. We focus on achieving a natural look and we use the latest techniques to produce stunning, pain-free results.
What is Botox?
Botox is an incredibly popular anti-ageing treatment that uses a purified form of toxin known as botulinum toxin type A to reduce the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is injected in very small quantities, and treatment is targeted to cover specific areas of the skin, including the forehead, around the eyes and between the mouth and nose. Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the facial muscles. This prevents contraction and causes the muscles to relax, making lines much less noticeable.
Botox treatment is very quick and pain is minimal. Sessions usually last around 15-30 minutes and the results last up to 6 months. A very fine needle is used to inject Botox into zones of the skin. Treatment can be repeated in the future to prolong the effects.
Is Botox safe?
Botox is approved for use in the UK, and Dr Neil Gerrard has extensive experience in using this treatment. His meticulous attention to detail ensures a comfortable treatment process and excellent, natural-looking results. After Botox treatment, there is a small risk of minor bruising and swelling, but this tends to subside very quickly.
If you dream of making 2015 the best year yet, why not start the year with a bang with one of our incredible facial rejuvenation treatments? With our non-surgical treatments, you can start the year looking and feeling great!
What is facial rejuvenation treatment?
Facial rejuvenation treatment is designed to make the skin look younger, brighter and fresher. It is commonly used to address common side-effects of the ageing process including facial lines, wrinkles and skin folds, and can also help to make dull skin look more radiant. We can also use facial rejuvenation treatment to add volume to sunken skin and enhance definition to create a more youthful look, bringing out your best features.
Our treatments
We offer Botox and dermal fillers.
Since Botox was medically approved in 2002, more than a million people have undergone treatment to minimise lines and wrinkles. Dr Neil Gerrard has extensive experience in treating patients using Botox and he aims to create a natural look that makes patients look and feel younger. Botox is injected into specific areas of the skin and it helps to make lines look less visible by blocking nerve signals to the facial muscles; this prevents muscle contraction and contributes to smoother looking skin.
Dermal fillers can be used to tackle fine lines and wrinkles and they are also designed to boost volume in the skin to combat the effects of decreased supplies of collagen and elastin, the fibres, which give the skin firmness. Fillers, like Botox, are injected into the skin and they help to make the complexion look brighter and smoother, as well as defining the cheeks and jaw line and enhancing the natural beauty of the face.
What does treatment involve?
Before facial rejuvenation treatment, all patients have a consultation, which enables them to find out more about treatment, ask questions and learn about what the actual procedure entails. One of the best things about facial rejuvenation is the simplicity and convenience of treatment. Dr Gerrard will discuss the areas you want to treat beforehand and then when you come in for your treatment, he will use a very fine needle to gently inject either Botox or filler into the skin. The injections should not be painful and you’ll be able to go home or back to work straight afterwards. The results of treatment are temporary and should last between 3 and 9 months.
