Dental implants are now proven to be the most successful and beneficial way of replacing a single tooth, several teeth or a full set of missing teeth. They are strong, realistic and permanent, providing an improved appearance, and the ability to eat what you want. A dental implant is a tiny titanium post that is gently placed into the jawbone. Over time the bone grows around and bonds with the titanium to provide a secure base for a tooth providing, in effect, a strong, stable and durable false tooth root. Implants can be used for replacing a single missing tooth, or for supporting a bridge with several teeth on, or partial or full dentures.
Bridges can be supported by the teeth on either side of the missing tooth/teeth, or by dental implants. The disadvantage of having them supported by the neighbouring teeth is that we often have to crown those teeth to make them strong enough to support the bridge. If we fill the gap with an implant instead, the neighbouring teeth are left untouched.
Traditional dentures are often fitted onto a plate, which can cover a large area of your mouth and can also be quite loose. This can affect your speech and taste, and can make it difficult to eat certain foods. Unsurprisingly, this can also affect your self-confidence when speaking and eating. Implant-supported dentures, however, are much smaller and are held firmly in place by the implants, making them the next best thing to still having your natural teeth.
