What causes gum disease?Gum disease is caused by harmful bacteria that release plaque acids that irritate the gums and result in them becoming sore, swollen and tender. Plaque acids are released by bacteria, which gather in the mouth as a result of poor oral hygiene. The risk of gum disease is also increased by smoking. Diet can also increase the risk of developing gum disease and we strongly recommend a healthy, balanced diet and avoiding consumption of sugary and acidic foods and drinks on a regular basis.
Preventing gum diseaseGood oral hygiene is the best form of defence against harmful bacteria and we recommend brushing twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time, flossing and using inter-dental brushes. We also advise patients to stick to regular 6 monthly check-ups and to be vigilant for the warning signs of gum disease. Symptoms to look out for include inflammation, soreness and redness in the gums and bleeding gums. Advanced symptoms include an unpleasant taste in the mouth, loose teeth and the development of pockets between the teeth and gums. We also encourage our patients to keep an eye on their sugar intake. If you notice any signs of gum disease, it’s really important to see your dentist as early as you can. Leaving gum disease untreated increases the risk of it becoming more serious and causing permanent damage to your teeth and gums.
The ins and outs of dental implantsDental implants are small titanium prostheses used to replace the tooth root when the natural tooth is lost through injury, infection or gum disease. The aim of treatment is to anchor a new crown, bridge or denture to create a healthy looking and functional smile. Before you start implant treatment, it is important for us to plan your treatment precisely. Once we have checked that you are a good candidate for implant treatment, we use the latest technology to find the optimum site for the dental implant in your jaw bone. A socket is created in the bone tissue using a dental drill and the implant is then placed very carefully. This involves creating an incision in the gum and lifting a small flap to access the bone. Once the implant is secure, the flap is closed and the implant is left to heal. Titanium is selected because it is biocompatible, which means that it can integrate into the bone in the same way a natural root is anchored. Once the process of osseointegration is complete, the implant can then be joined to a crown, denture or bridge, which replaces the visible part of the tooth. Implants are impressive because they provide the same level of functionality as a healthy tooth. They are last for many years and produce beautifully natural looking aesthetics, so nobody will ever guess that you have implants rather than natural teeth.
Am I a suitable candidate for implant treatment?Implant treatment is suited to most adults with missing teeth, however there may be some exceptions. If you have active gum disease, your bone tissue is very weak or you are a heavy smoker, there may be other options that are more appropriate before we continue with treatment. When you have your consultation, we will go through some basic tests to ascertain whether implants are suitable and discuss the treatment and any other potential options in detail with you.

What is complete smile rejuvenation?Complete smile rejuvenation is a technique that uses a combination of restorative treatments to repair and replace broken and lost teeth. Treatments used to achieve a complete smile rejuvenation include:
- dental bridges
- dental implants
- porcelain crowns
What does treatment entail?Complete smile rejuvenation is a complex process and planning is of paramount importance. Before we start carrying out treatment, we conduct thorough examinations and tests to ascertain the degree of damage and decide which treatments would be most beneficial. Communication is key and we explain the treatment options and what is happening at which point. This helps to make sure every client has a clear idea of what treatment involves and what they can expect from their individual reconstruction. Once your personalised treatment plan has been drawn up, your dentist can start your treatment and you will have a series of sessions. The exact process will depend on which treatments you have and your dentist will let you know what is planned for each individual session. By the end of your treatment, you can expect your smile to look more attractive and you will feel a lot more confident when you smile is in the spotlight.
About porcelain crownsPorcelain crowns are dental restorations called into action when a tooth is damaged, broken or infected. The aim of the crown is to strengthen the tooth and reduce the risk of further injury or decay. Crowns are placed over the existing tooth structure once the tooth has been shaped and prepared. Porcelain crowns are very popular because they match the colour of natural teeth and have a lovely sheen to make your smile sparkle.
What does treatment involve?Crown treatment usually involves two sessions: the first session is used to shape the tooth and create the mould for your new crown. Your dentist will remove any decayed or damaged tissue and clean your tooth thoroughly before using dental putty to create an impression. The second session is used to fit your new crown and it usually takes place around 2 weeks later. The crown is placed over the tooth and firmly secured. Porcelain crowns should ideally last around 5-10 years. When you have your crown fitted, your dentist will explain how to look after it and they will also check your crown every time you have a routine dental check-up. If you’ve been struggling with toothache or haven’t been to the dentist in a while, now is the time to give us a call and make sure you’re fighting fit for the festive period!
What is gum re-shaping?Gum re-shaping is a cosmetic procedure and is most commonly used to treat a gummy smile. A gummy smile is not a dental health problem as such, but it can affect your confidence and have a major bearing on the way you feel, especially around others. A gummy smile is a term used to describe the look of the smile when a larger than normal amount of gum tissue is visible. It often makes the teeth look small and can make the smile look imbalanced. Gum reshaping aims to expose more of the tooth crown by removing a small amount of excess gum tissue. The end result is a beautifully balanced smile and hopefully, a much more confident client.
How does gum reshaping work?Gum re-shaping treatment can usually be completed in a single trip to the clinic and it is a simple procedure. Your dentist will carefully remove a small amount of gum tissue and shape the gums to unveil more of the tooth crowns. Your dentist will explain exactly what treatment involves and what you can expect during and after treatment when you have your consultation. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask. If you would like to find out more about gum reshaping or discuss some treatment options to make your smile look more attractive, our friendly dental team will be happy to help! Why not give us a call today?
What are dental implants and when are they used?Dental implants are a modern solution for patients with missing teeth and can be used as an alternative to dental bridges and dentures. Implants are made from titanium, which is a biocompatible material. This means that once the implant is placed inside a socket in the jaw bone, it can integrate into the actual bone tissue. Integration facilitates enhanced stability, which means that the new tooth offers the same level of strength and functionality as a healthy natural tooth. Dental implants are suited to most people with missing teeth, as they are compatible with various different restorations including bridges, dentures and single crowns.
